Flexible Working for all?

Posted on Wed 14 Feb 2007, 11:57 in Work

The Children's Minister, Beverley Hughes, has just called for flexible working rights to be extended to all employees. Her proposal seems to be meeting a positive response from all quarters.

I am Editor of the homeworking website at www.enterprisenation.com and we welcome any move the Government makes to increase homeworking levels.

This is exactly what will happen if Beverley Hughes gets her way. The Right to Request Flexible Working is currently only open to a group of parents and carers. Ms Hughes would like it extended to all other 29 million employees who are not currently covered so they too can balance and blend work and life.

We think this is a good suggestion so long as it does not burden business with more regulation. If implemented well, flexible working can deliver benefits to both employer and employee.

Admittedly BT is a big company with people dedicated to flexible working but they have recorded reduced property costs, improved productivity, reduced absenteeism and improvements to the environment from their army of their 70,000 flexi-workers.

It is interesting to watch the political parties joust in what is a battle to become the most work/life friendly party.

We continue to watch with interest.
