Transformers, more than meets the eye, or so the catchphrase goes. In truth this film is entirely what meets the eye.
Fast flowing, eye-catching visual effects are present throughout and even at a time when we take CGI for granted it’s hard not to be impressed as these robots transform and do battle in the city streets. The constant action and a deafening rock sound track make this one of the most entertaining of the summer blockbusters.
It will come as little surprise that the plot is somewhat predictable. There are the good robots who want to protect human life (Autobots), the bad ones who want to destroy it (Decepticons) and a nerdy teenager (Sam Witwicky) who falls in love with a rebellious girl (Mikaela). Not the most original story of all time.
Shia LaBeouf is cast as Witwicky and does an excellent job adding a touch of geeky and ironic humour to the proceedings, a human touch that is a sharp and much needed break from the robotic action.
When Sam decides to sell his grandfathers spectacles on Ebay he inadvertently becomes the target of both robot races. They have scratched in their lens, the location of a powerful piece of technology that has the ability to turn objects into robots. The Decepticons want it to turn all human life into robots and take over the planet, the Autobots want to stop them. And so the battle begins.
If you watched the TV show as a child then this film will deliver on all fronts. A sentimental reminder of the innocence of your youth. An action packed blockbuster, with spectacular special effects and a typically rocky Michael Bay soundtrack. However, if you require thought provoking substance with your cinema experiences stay away, if not sit back and enjoy.

I have yet to see this and am worried about spending 6 quid on something which is garenteed to dissapoint!!i love the cartoons but i do wonder whether it will measure up
Being the tragic person that I am I didn't see tranformers until I saw all the cartoons again - the film is fairly spot on really.
How did such a beatiful girlie end up working for the US government?

We saw it at the weekend. The robots are brilliant and the CGI is the best I've seen yet, but the script... yuk! It had all the Hollywood staples - unecessary small child scene; pointless yappy dog scene; cring-worthy comedy black characters (bulging eyes and Uncle Tom accents are back - or never went away). Another good film let down by a paint-by-numbers script.
